Step 2: Examinations

Fundamentals of Engineering Exam

The FE exam consists of morning and afternoon sessions (4 hours each). The first session contains 120 questions and covers the following topics:

  • Statics and dynamics
  • Strength of materials
  • Material properties

The second session, in similar fashion, contains 60 questions and you may choose one from seven available modules. The latter include civil, general, chemical, environmental, electrical, industrial and mechanical engineering.

Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam

Likewise, the second important examination is the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE), which makes up Part B of the licensing process.

Step 3: Gain experience

The state of Utah requires future professional engineers to practice engineering under the supervision of a licensed engineer and gain experience. You should work as an engineer for four or more years to be eligible for licensure.
